Rich Men Can Get To Heaven
In Jerusalem at the time of Christ, there was a gate in the wall of the city that was forgotten by most of its citizens due to its unimportance in the theme of things. It seemed to be important only during times of seige. Then it became paramount to the defense of the city.
It was a small gate, only half as high as the other gates, if that. The idea was that when the enemy surrounded the city of Jerusalem, spies could enter and exit the city through this gate. They could bring in supplies, such as food, water and ammunition.
But, it was a small gate. It had to be, to escape notice by the enemy. If anyone came riding on a camel, the person was forced to dismount before attempting to come inside. Then, the visitor forced his camel to its knees, and made it crawl inside the gate. Camels are capable of doing this, and it was the only way to protect the camel's life during seige.
Since the gate was so important to the survival of the city during times of seige they coined a special name for it. They called it "the eye of the needle".
Jesus was aware of this phenomenon. He used it in a parable, and that is how we know of its existence in Jerusalem today. To quote Mark 10:25: "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (New International Version)
You see, rich men have always been able to enter the kingdom of heaven. They just have to be able to get down on their knees.
